I just finished this book this morning! And I wanted to write about him and his works while it was still fresh in my mind. He was born July 19th, 1834. My personal thoughts I feel that Edgar Degas was best known for his ballerina oil paintings and paste works. All sorts of different scenes just from this one topic. Like before while taking a stretch to during a play - each one I enjoyed and felt like he captured a-lot of emotions related to that activity, those have been my favorite. I thought it was interesting also how he was a photographer. And he did some sculptures which turned out quite well. Edgar was an impressionist (I feel most if not all of these books they are impressionists which I'm okay with!). His life seemed to be quite and towards the end lonely. He believed an artist couldn't' have a personal life. In fact this caused other friends to distance themselves from him.

Have any of you heard of Edgar Degas and have seen his works?

an art professor at my school held a workshop at my town’s nature center on making cyanotypes and it was super fun! the first one didn’t get exposed long enough but it’s kind of cool in a ghostly way. the second one is david lynch’s angriest dog in the world (as recreated by me, to the best of my ability). it came out better (still could have used more exposure) but i want to do more with the composition, so i might turn it into a collage background. the final attempt is “we went to blue world” and was finally exposed long enough to turn super blue!! the cloud was a loosely-tied ball of lace :) all three were collaborations between alison and i.. we had a lot of fun coming up with ideas and trying to make them turn out! we stuck around for a while waiting on our last one and got to chat with the professor, who gave us ALL the extra supplies, so we’re going to start doing these for fun! if i do end up trying to get some community thing organized it might be cool to advertise it with laminated cyanotype flyers

current mood: too energetic to sleep, too tired to do anything
current music: earthmover by have a nice life
current beverage: bottled water :/ not my favorite
current activity: hanging out with alison and watching the katmai bears while we both do our own thing
goal for today: find some cool plants! ✓❀
i’m looking forward to… going to h mart.. i’m hoping to find hochija
i’m feeling grateful for… all the music coming out lately! uboa, a stick and a stone, riddance, and soon pinko fibers
notes: i’m staying with my best friend for a couple days since xe’s about to move halfway across the country and it’s really nice to hang out again! the plant swap today was super fun and made me wish my city (a small-ish college town) had something like that/more of a community. there’s a lot of nonprofit and charity stuff but younger people don’t really have those sorts of ways to connect that you get in bigger cities. i’m wondering what it would take to get something started and i even have a venue in mind, but i don’t know how to find people to show up!

plant update! i keep getting distracted learning about plants lately, i took notes on preventing and treating root rot for like half an hour today. anyway
❀ my lilac is probably doomed, but i’m going to do my best. that means being really brave and checking the root ball (i’m terrified of plant roots and also the other parts of the plant) to see if i can do anything to help there. it’s still putting out new leaves so i’d really like to help it pull through, but it has a serious case of lilac blight :(
❀ my fennel is droopy but vigorous, which could either be a sign of early stages of root rot or just a topheavy plant. i’m going to do some investigating there, too. i also need to prune it but am waiting for a dry day since it’s been so humid
❀ i’m worried that something got into my soil, and it’s probably just paranoia but an awful lot of my plants have had very similar problems lately. i’m going to use a gift card i got for my birthday a few months ago to order some fresh soil and toss the old stuff.. it’s not a huge expense and could potentially make a big difference
❀ i fertilized the plants that needed it (a little late), we’ll see if it helps anything
❀ as far as good news goes, my succulents are doing well and my outdoor cacti are finally back outside (they finished painting our front door and porch at last!)
❀ most exciting of all i’ve gotten new plants, which is inspiring me to make sure everything’s in good shape. i got three lucky bamboo stalks (i used to have another bunch, but they succumbed to the mold that my old apartment was infested with), a golden pothos (i’d been wanting a full shade trailing plant!), a hardy aloe, an aloe vera, and a spider plant as well as some radish seeds. i’m hoping i can get that new soil soon and pot them properly, but until i know i have clean potting mix i don’t want to pot them. i got them at a plant swap so some of them honestly don’t need to be repotted and the few that do will be fine for a little while. i do have a cutting i’m anxious to get in the ground but i need to get its roots started first anyway

Came accross this cropped screenshot someone mentioned was from Patlabor on which two very familiar looking girls are passing by. Not sure of this was a dedicated cameo or just coincidence, but am trying to see what episode and sweies from Patlabor its from.

Its still pretty neat.

EDIT: Thanks to a reply below, I got told its most likely from episode 2 of the Patlabor OVA.

IT'S HAPPENING. YOU GUYS IT'S HAPPENING. After literal months of dragging my feet due to a pet health situation, I finally bit the bullet yesterday and bought my plane tickets. To be fair to me, that did take several hours of thinking and comparing, because I'm also going to Slovenia to see friends, so I had to consider three one-way legs vs nested round-trips, plus see what day was cheapest to leave and come back within various other constraints, etc. BUT I HAVE THEM. AND I LEAVE IN LITERALLY THREE WEEKS AHHHHH.

Friend I'm going to the concert with told me all her friends are jealous because none of them could get tickets. 😇😇😇 I've seen photos of big Oasis displays over in the UK. Sounds like the hype is huge, can't wait to see it for myself.

In celebration, here's some top-notch Oasis content I've come across recently:
Noel calling into TalkSports, 6/27. On one hand, there's been basically zero official promo (unless you count a really slickly produced video advertising their exclusive Adidas line, which I do not???). On the other hand: Noel randomly calling into a sports radio show every so often. He seems in SUCH GOOD SPIRITS here omg, constantly referring to Liam as "our kid," winding up the hosts, being silly, and cheerfully declaring that it's "too late to back out [of the tour] now."

‘Liam had been drinking all night. Noel was not in a great mood’: photographers pick their best Oasis shot (The Guardian). Some fantastic quotes in this.
Bands – especially ones with a pretty boy singer or a female singer – can get really nervous that the singer gets all the attention. Noel was never like that. He said: “You’ve got to use the assets you’ve got.” -- Kevin Cummings

Are you fucking kidding me. Just when you think you've finally seen all the best/weirdest quotes from Noel about Liam... there's always more.
We were booked on the same flight, but the band were in club class and me and the hack were in goats-and-chickens. Liam came back to say hello. He was a garrulous guy, even pre-fame. He was standing at the back of the plane having a beer and this woman came by huffing and puffing with some kids and Liam offered to look after one of them. He pulled down one of those seats the flight attendants sit on and had the girl on his lap and chatted to her. After the tales I’d heard, I’d thought I was about to spend a few days with a nutcase. But he was sweet as a nut. -- Tom Sheehan

🥺🥺🥺

And in conclusion, a performance of the song that got me into Oasis, from 1997 near the peak of Oasis mania:

Noel gets so into the prechorus that he sings along with Liam even though he's not at the mic at the time, Liam looks like he's having a religious experience during Noel's guitar solo and then does a little dance, Noel looks like he's having a difference kind of experience during the solo... Top notch stuff.

Spring anime, and into summer

(Crossposted from my journal.)

Apocalypse Hotel was great. Just great. Go watch it. It's definitely on my Hugo ballot next year.

Kowloon Generic Romance ended very well, even if the finale didn't quite have time to spell out every last detail of what was going on. Presumably the manga, which is ending soon, will be able to explain better. Recommended with some disclaimers: there are some very male-gaze camera angles at first but they stop after episode 2, and there is someone who initially appears to be a depressingly stereotypical queer villain but ultimately becomes three-dimensional and far more sympathetic.

Zatsu Tabi continued to be exactly what it appeared to be, a low-key story about travel and introduction to some of Japan's lesser-known tourist attractions.

Sword of the Demon Hunter is continuing into summer, but I have to say this: The choice to fridge someone in the first episode wound up feeling more and more out of place as the story went on. The subsequent story isn't grimdark at all; eventually it's about a guy hanging out in a soba shop with his friends and taking on jobs with an emphasis on how his work heals the community. Even the demons are mostly sympathetic at this point. So I'm not sure why the author chose to do that, other than he couldn't think of another way to get the protagonist out of his comortable village life and out into the world.

For next season, the shows I'm looking at fall into three categories:

Shows I am truly interested in checking out: Bullet/Bullet, Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show, The Earthbound Mole, Onmyo Kaiten Re: Birth Verse
Show I would be checking out if it weren't on Netflix: The Summer Hikaru Died
Shows I should be excited about on paper but am not really: Cute High Earth Defense Club Haikara!, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun season 2 part 2, Ruri Rocks

There's a local queer contra that I have known about for a very long time (probably close to a decade tbh, which is wild) (mostly because I uh keep forgetting exactly how long I've been out here) but have never actually gone to because the friend who got me into contra during college wouldn't go (which, hah, idk if she'd call herself queer, so.) and I usually only went to the dances with friends, so. No reason to. I've never really cared about the Intrinsic Gendering Of Dance Terminology anyway (calling the moves for Ladies and Gents is exactly as irrelevant to me as calling it for Robins/Ravens and Larks) (I mean, I like that the non-gendered terms queers came up with are birds, but. I don't think it stops people from having gendered associations with the roles, it just removes the explicitly gendered terminology.), and tbh it's not actually hard to meet queers at events not aimed at queers when you're in such a queer-friendly area. Plus the general events are, y'know. Larger. And if I am there mostly because of music and dance, then... more people is nicer, makes the dances easier to have more people to keep the pattern flowing.

But the queer contra is also still a mask-required space, and it's one of the only dances in the area (like. two-hour radius, from what a friend said.) with that requirement, which is why said friend brought her friends out from Albany to try contra at this dance, and then messaged me like "hey are you around this weekend? I am going to be at this dance, could you be there too?", to which I was like "!!! YES <3".

this is a lot of rambling )

What a lucky guy

Finished Episode 2 of the Dirty Pair series and will continue it as much as I get the time to do do so.

Speaking of Anime watching, am also resuming All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku (say that ten times fast,) which I haven't got to finish it ever since I owned a VHS tape with a couple episodes long ago. That's something I need to rectify.

Also trying to finish Patlabor the Mobile Police to move on to other series like Dr. Stone and the last season of My Hero Academia. There are other series I'm eyeing but for now, I'm trying to finish what I had watched before in order to move forward.

84 Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff

A sweet epistolatory memoir consisting of the letters written by a woman in New York City with extremely specific tastes (mostly classic nonfiction) and the English bookseller whose books she buys. Their correspondence continues over 20 years, from the 1940s to the 1960s. It's an enjoyable read but I think it became a ginormous bestseller largely because it hit some kind of cultural zeitgeist when it came out.

I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, by Lauren Tarshis

The graphic novel version! I read this after DNFing the supposedly definitive book on the event, Dark Flood, due to the author making all sorts of unsourced claims while bragging about all the research he did. The point at which I returned the book to Ingram with extreme prejudice was when he claimed that no one had ever written about the flood before him except for children's books where it was depicted as a delightful fairyland where children danced around snacking on candy. WHAT CHILDREN'S BOOKS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

The heroine of I Survived the Great Molasses Flood is an immigrant from Italy whose family was decimated in a flood over there. A water flood. It's got a nice storyline about the immigrant experience. The molasses flood is not depicted as a delightful fairyland because I suspect no one has ever done that. It also provides the intriguing context that the molasses was not used for sweetening food, but was going to be converted into sugar alcohol to be used, among other things, for making bombs!

My favorite horrifying detail was that when the giant molasses vat started expanding, screws popped out so fast that they acted as shrapnel. I also enjoyed the SPLOOSH! SPLAT! GRRRRMMMMM! sound effects.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, by Stuart Turton

A very unusual murder mystery/historical/fantasy/??? about a guy who wakes up with amnesia in someone else's body. He quickly learns that he is being body-switched every time he falls asleep, into the bodies of assorted people present at a party where Evelyn Hardcastle was murdered. He needs to solve the mystery, or else.

This premise gets even more complicated from then on; it's not just a mystery who killed Evelyn Hardcastle, but why he's being bodyswapped, and who other mysterious people are. It's technically adept and entertaining. Everything does have an explanation, and a fairly interesting and weird one - which makes sense, as it's a weird book.

Watching Dirty Pair

Up till now I've only watched the OAVs and the reboot Dirty Pair Flash which didn't attract me as much as the old timy whimy series. I never even knew a series existed until I stumbled into them on youtube. I gotta say there's a lot of what you can learn from here which potentially connects to said OAVs, and the 80s scifi feel of its phenomenal.

Dirty Pair is a gallant guilty pleasure of mine.

Uboa’s notes on All the Dead Melt Down as Rain (2025):

Made in a dizzy haze during a bout of chronic illness, All the Dead Melt Down as Rain was hastily constructed almost entirely in the bedroom. Dealing with (my/Xandra's) experience with POTS, it is a vague, noisy, anxious, and depressive muck taking cues from (my/her) older works, The Sky May Be and The Origin of My Depression (of which the final track is a 'reimagining' of the latter's opening track, Detransitioning). Composed from quick improvisations then carved into their final form over several weeks, All the Dead ranges from harsh noise to depressive doom metal to avant-garde classical and classic death industrial.

With POTS, blood flow to the brain is compromised, leading to dizzy spells, brain fog, syncope, headaches, and panic-like symptoms. All the Dead aims to capture how this reduced cerebral blood capacity feels — like passing out into a nightmare — all while everybody outside has forgotten you exist.

Dedicated to anybody else who struggles with the unpredictably boring horror of chronic illness.
